On 4th of May we have a show case in Victoria and Albert Museum. Eight of BA and MA students from CSM had a work in progress show and talk named Material Matter. It is a great experience for us to work in a group and prepare everything of this show by ourselves. We have tried to find connections between each other projects which are so different but have material as a base and focus. Here is some photos of the event and the link help you to find out more about each projects.

Throughout history fire has stood as a symbol of life and a light from God; divine energy, purification, revelation, and transformation. On the other hand, fire is a sacred element which sometimes is the judge and other times is a symbol of autumn, as a divine light by which beauty could be reached through. Moreover fire is a conventional metaphor for love.

The main inspiration comes from ancient Persian myth; in which the fire ordeal is used to prove innocence.

This project seeks to work with the physical manifestations of fire which can be found in all our ancient national roots. The work explores smoke as a tool for drawing and making patterns. It tries to find new aesthetics from the fire and fabric engagement. It aims to change the common considerations of fire by exploring different styles and materials of print. I endeavor to show that it is possible to make new patterns by controlling fire.

In the time that we have loads of technology and industrially designed and manufactured material and tools which bombard all of us and get improved so fast, it is really interesting to look back and see what was going on previous days. You can always find something simple but big enough to encourage you and change your perception and attitude. Sometimes a very low tech process and technique give you the exact result that you looking for; like carbon mark from a candle flame or traditional tie-dye techniques.

This project looks at fire as a main tool or a side effect in design process and its potentials and power during the chemical/physical reactions. Fire is something which always present in our life and the technology progress make more potential to use it. Fire as a classical element in relation with new material and tools could be an ongoing design project.

In case of future this project by introducing a new way of using material and techniques could affect textile design process. It is a dry way of creating pattern with no water and therefore no water pollution. Although there are sustainable aspects to the process, it is not intended for large scale and mass production. It has historical, cultural and ethnical roots with a glimpse of contemporariness. It is a personal visualization and journey through fire and its stories.

In compare with other art and design pieces which used fire itself, this work use fire as a main tool to create textile pattern which is durable. It is a practical and functional project which challenges material and controlling fire. It is quite unique and original way of merging fire and textile to create pattern.

I was graduated from BA textile design in Iran in 2006. I am passionate in doing historical/cultural research and have done a research about the gods and goddesses in eastern cultures and their similarities during my BA. Also another essay about how and from when writing and calligraphy was coming in to the textile patterns in different cultures especially in Islamic textile. This one was become an inspiration for my BA final project which is a collection inspired from different Persian calligraphies. As a BA student I have done more print and some little experiment in weave. I have 1year experience in batik printing and painting.
To continue my study I came to London and started my MA in CSM and now I am in the final year of design for textile futures.
